Electric service crumbled over the weekend in Santiago and most of the Cibao Valley, in which some of the towns in this area known as the heartland of the Dominican Republic were without power for the entire weekend as the result of major generator shutdowns within the national electric grid. Smith-Enron, which supplies power to much of the northern half of the country, shut its operations down, as did Puerto Plata Electric Company. Monte Rio, which had supplied 98MW of power, lowered its output to 52.4 MW. The Santiago newspaper La Informacion reports that the water supply has also been affected by the prolonged blackouts. According to the Listin Diario, the entire electric generation descended to a new low of just 600MW. The facility at Haina, which had been providing over 200MW of power, reduced its output to just 95MW, and then on Friday lowered it again to the very minimum. With Itabo, AES-Andres, Cogentrix II and III, Smith-Enron and Puerto Power Electric Co. out of service, and Monte Rio with a reduced output, only the hydroelectric dams of Palamera, La Vega, Cogentrix I, Estrella de Mar and Estrella del Norte are currently online.
