The National Water Observatory reported yesterday, Wednesday, 20 April 2016 that there is an active frontal system that is likely to cause heavy rain showers beginning tomorrow, Friday 22 April 2016 over a large part of the Dominican Republic. The system is expected to contribute to increasing water levels in the nation’s reservoirs and lakes. The forecast by the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) was released during a meeting held each Wednesday at the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI). The dams that should receive more water include Jiguey, Valdesia, Tavera, Rincon, Moncion, Hatillo and Sabana Yegua. Forecaster Luis Felipe Jerez said that the rains would be stronger from Saturday 23 until Tuesday 26 and that they expect as much as 87 mm of water.
INDRHI deputy director Franklin Reynoso said that these rains would greatly benefit the country. He reiterated nonetheless that the rationing plan would continue in force for farm irrigation systems because it has been successful. The meeting was attended by representatives of the CAASD, Coraasan, the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company, the National Institute of Water and Sewers and the Ministry of Defense.
