More products receive Denomination of Origin certifications

The National Industrial Property Office (Onapi) has awarded Geographical Indication (GI) certificates for Dominican Mangos to the Mango Promoters, Producers and Exporters Association and Denomination of Origin (DO) certificates for coffee and avocado producers. The DR now has three GIs and six DOs.

The DOs certificates were awarded to Cafe Juncalito produced by the Special Coffee Producers Association (Asoprocaes) and Oro Verde Cambita to the Dominican Avocado Committee in Cambita.

Cafe Juncalito’s denomination of origin recognizes the eco-tourism and forestry reserve located in the Central Mountain Range in Janico, where the coffee growing tradition has been passed on by several generations. Oro Verde Cambita benefits more than 100 producers who will be exporting to Europe.

The IG Dominican Mangos protects the value chain for producing Dominican mangos.

During the event to present the certificates yesterday, Thursday 21 April 2016, Onapi director Sandy Lockward highlighted that the Denominations of Origin and Geographical Indications involve the creation of regional regulators to ensure that quality standards are maintained and to protect the brands to make them more competitive in local and international markets. Michelle Guzman of Onapi stressed that the DO and IG certificates would guarantee a secure future for the producers.
