The head of the Central Criminal Investigation Unit (Dicrim) in Esperanza in the northwestern province of Valverde (Mao), Major Santo Taveras Urena was killed yesterday, Monday, 25 April 2016 during the annual local celebrations in Maizal.
He died after being shot in the chest by Juan Jose Jimenez, who also injured another three people including police corporal Angelian Barrido.
According to reports, Taveras Urena and Barrido were members of a patrol who tried to arrest Jimenez who then started shooting. Jimenez was shot in both legs and in his left hand and is being treated for his injuries at a local medical center. Taveras Urena had only been transferred to Esperanza as head of Dicrim some five days ago.
