Antun to lead PRSC

Engineer Federico ?Quique? Antun has assumed the presidency of the PRSC following the resignation of Rafael Bello Andino. Antun was the first vice-president of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) which governed the country for 22 years during the period 1966-1996, but which received less than 9% of the vote in the May 2004 election. Bello Andino, the late President Joaquin Balaguer?s closest personal assistant, took over the PRSC party leadership following the death of the legendary statesman. Antun had convened the Executive Commission to meet on 2 August, and confirmed then that the regular and special assemblies to restructure the party?s boards would meet on 30 September. The party suffered a major blow when former Santiago senator Eduardo Estrella was chosen as the PRSC?s presidential candidate through PRD-PPH support. Estrella?s contender, former Vice-President Jacinto Peynado, disputed the results of the convention, citing the existence of widespread fraud. President Mejia publicly admitted that Estrella had been backed by his PPH faction. This admission led to a major division within the PRSC party. The tactic, nevertheless backfired for the reelection aspirations of President Mejia when the Peynado supporters chose to favor the candidacy of the PLD?s Leonel Fernandez, instead of their own PRSC candidate, in last May?s election. Estrella received only 8.65% of the total vote, an all-time low for the PRSC.
