President Danilo Medina inaugurated a renewable energy plant in the eastern province of San Pedro de Macoris yesterday Tuesday 26 April 2016. The San Pedro Bio-Energy (SPBE) has a 30- megawatt power generation capacity. The new plant was built at a cost of RD$4.5 billion and is co-managed by Putney Capital Management.
At the inaugural event, the plant was described as the first biomass system that connects to the country’s power supply. The energy is generated from sugar cane waste and other plants. According to company president Rafael Velez the plant will use around 400,000 tons of sugar cane waste and around 100,000 tons of lead tree (leucaena) every year.
