Airplane invades Presidential Palace airspace

In the middle of a ceremony when ambassadors were presenting their credentials to President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace yesterday Tuesday 3 May 2016, the airspace above the Presidential Palace was invaded by a light aircraft distributing flyers in support of the National Unity Party (PUN) candidate for National District Senator, General Rafael Percival Pena.

The aircraft circled the building three times, as the President was in the Ambassadors’ Salon receiving credentials from the ambassador of El Salvador, the first of four ambassadors attending the ceremony.

Security guards collected the flyers but there was no further reaction to the incident.

Major General Adan Caceres informed President Medina as he was about to receive credentials from the new Argentinean ambassador.

Percival Pena is well known in Dominican society, and has been at the center of controversy on several occasions, the latest being when he complained about aggression against Judge Jose Hernandez Peguero after an argument in the Centro Cuesta Nacional on 27 de Febrero Avenue in Santo Domingo.

The Dominican Aviation Institute (IDAC) announced it was cancelling Percival Pena’s pilot license after the violation of the airspace.
