President Medina took a group of government officials and special guests for a ride on board the metro cars riding the new extension of the Santo Domingo Metro yesterday morning, Thursday, 5 May 2016. Line 2B is the first to connect eastern and western Santo Domingo, crossing the Ozama River on a bridge built especially for the public transport system that links Santo Domingo East, the most populated area of Greater Santo Domingo with over two million residents, with the National District with around one million residents.
The ride started at the first station on the line, Eduardo Brito, to the last station located between Av. San Vicente de Paul and the Mella Highway outside the Megacentro mall. The station will be named in memory of the late mayor of Santo Domingo East, Juan de los Santos who was murdered in his office by a disgruntled supplier on 15 December 2015.
The President was accompanied by Metro Office (Opret) director Diandino Pena, Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta, the PLD mayoral candidate for Santo Domingo East Alfredo Martinez and the late mayor’s widow, Berlinesa Franco, among others.
The Presidency estimates that more than 100,000 people will use the service in its first six months.
Opret announced free Metro rides during off-peak hours from 10am until 4pm and from 7:30pm until 9:30pm to enable Opret as well as the public to test the new system. On Saturday and Sunday the Metro will be available from 10am until 9:30pm and from Monday 9 May until Friday 13 May with a schedule of 10am until 4pm and 7:30 to 9:30pm.
The 2B Metro Line will use 18 cars on the line for Los Mina and Santo Domingo East, at Av. Venezuela, Fernandez de Navarrete, Calle Trina de Moya and Carretera Mella with San Vicente de Paul (Megacentro).
However, Diario Libre tells users that it will be many months before the 2B line is in service. Metro Office (Opret) director Diandino Pena says that Congress still has to pass a loan for the purchase of 18 cars to be used on the line. Three cars are being used to cover the 3.8 km route in the trial run.
