DR gets chance to send woman archer to Olympics

For the first time, on 9 May 2016, a woman from the Dominican Republic has come a step closer to qualifying for the Rio Olympics in archery. As reported in World Archery website, in a first tournament in Medellin, Colombia Yessica Camilo earned a slot for the country. However, she now needs to shoot the minimum qualifying score, which is 600, in a world record status competition. She scored 557 out of 720 points in Medellin.

The next competition is the Hyundai Archery World Cup also taking place in Medellin, Colombia.

Earlier, she along with competitors from Canada, Venezuela, Mexico, El Salvador and Chile each won a Rio 2016 invitation at this week’s one-day world ranking tournament that served as a continental Olympics qualifier in Medellin, Colombia. Participants battled for six tickets to the Olympics.

Thirty athletes from 12 nations fought for the three recurve men’s spots, while 14 competitors from seven countries entered into the recurve women’s draw. Archers ranked over a 72-arrow 70-metre round then advanced into head-to-head eliminations n and a maximum of one men’s and one women’s place could be taken by each country.

To win the ticket for the Dominican Republic, Yessica Camilo upset Cuba’s Elizabeth Rodriguez in a shoot-off that ended with Camilo’s win.

The quarterfinal match, between 12th seed Camilo and fourth-ranked Rodriguez, decided which of the two nations took the third women’s place available in Medellin.

But now, Camilo needs to make the minimum qualifying score to make the Dominican team to the Olympics.
