A mission of around 40 Dominican businesspeople and government officials is in Havana for the signing of a series of bilateral economic and trade agreements aimed at increasing trade, investment and cooperation between both countries. The ultimate aim is to create a strategic alliance for the mutual benefit of both countries, as reported by Noticias SIN.
The deputy minister of Foreign Relations for Economic Affairs and Trade Negotiations, Cesar Dargam and Cuba’s deputy minister of Foreign Relations Ileana Nunez recently signed an agreement affirming political will on the part of both governments to promote initiatives and projects of common interest.
Dargam led an official mission to Cuba that also included several prominent businesspeople, led by Dominican Republic Association of Industries (AIRD) president Campos de Moya and National Business Council (Conep) president Rafael Blanco, with the support of the Dominican ambassador in Cuba, Joaquin Geronimo.
During the visit, the mission visited the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Relations and met with representatives of Cuban entities such as ProCuba and the chamber of commerce.
Dargam said that the visit was part of President Danilo Medina’s new foreign policy and that the agreements highlighted the potential for enhanced relations.
A public-private joint task force with members from both countries was appointed to follow up on the agreement. Both countries are working towards the signing of a partial scope trade agreement. The Dominican Republic already has a partial scope trade agreement with Panama.
