Medina seeks to be re-elected on 15 May 2016

64-year old President Danilo Medina is hoping that the polls are accurate and that he will secure a comfortable win for another four years as President of the Republic. Several leading polls show he will win with at least 60% of the vote.

Medina has been Minister of the Presidency, president of the Chamber of Deputies and now President. His term ends on 16 August 2016, unless on that same day he is sworn in for four more years through 2020. The 2015 Constitution he pushed to be amended with the support of PRD legislators establishes that Medina cannot seek a second re-election in 2020. While an arch-rival of the PLD for decades, Medina turned the PRD into an ally and supporter of his re-election bid for the 2016 election.

An economics graduate from Intec, Medina has backed his electoral campaign of doing more of what he has done in his first four years in government, including a major infrastructure construction program, economic stability, and increasing support to business sector and enhancing the quality of public education.

Born in San Juan de la Maguana, Medina began his political career when studying chemical engineering at the UASD.

President Danilo Medina chose the wife of former President Leonel Fernandez, Margarita Cedeno as his running mate for the second time. Medina is married to psychologist Candida Montilla and has three adult daughters.
