Dominican Stanley del Carmen Cruz has won first place in the track and field qualifier for the Rio Olympics the Iberoamericano de Atletismo held in Rio de Janeiro. In the same event, Luguelin Santos came in second in the 400-meter dash. Del Carmen and Santos have secured places in the Dominican team. He completed the 100-meter dash in 10.27, his personal best. The runners up were Brazilian Jorge Vides with 10.25 and Colombian Diego Echavarria with 10.30. Echavarria was the favorite to win the race.
A fourth Dominican Olympics track team member, Yancarlos Martinez placed first in the 200-meter race clocking in 20:19, a new national record. Martinez became a runner after failing to make it as a professional baseball player. He also qualified for the Dominican team to Rio 2016. A fourth qualified for the Rio Olympics for the Dominican Republic track team is Gustavo Cuesta.
