With almost two thirds of the votes counted, and with a 62% to 35% lead over Luis Abinader of the PRM, President Danilo Medina headed the ruling party’s victory celebration yesterday evening, Monday 16 May 2016. In his address to his supporters, President Medina called for everyone to work in unity for the benefit of the entire Dominican nation. “The result a victory of the Dominican people, and that is why I extend my hands to my adversaries in this electoral campaign and with all the respect they deserve because they also represent an important part of Dominican society.” He highlighted that the electorate has expressed its support for the country to continue in the direction chosen since 2012 and that he would follow this for the next four years.
