In the National District, 54.89% of the 733,552 eligible voters cast their vote, with 56.49% voting for a change after three terms under the PLD Mayor Roberto Salcedo who sought a fourth term and received 37.30% of the vote. Collado, a deputy and TV program host (Emprendedores) was chosen as the PRM candidate in March 2016 and had barely a month and a half to campaign.
In his first meeting with city community groups from the three areas of the National District on Monday, 16 May 2016, the mayor-elect said he would respect the existing capacities in the city hall but that his team would be made up of PRM members. He said he would work in alliance with community organizations to restore the efficiency of basic services, re-instate order and apply the budget as established in public mandate 176-07. Dulce de los Santos, Daniel Valdez and Yolanda Ramirez joined him in signing the agreement with the community groups.
He announced that garbage would be collected from 2am to 6am to decongest traffic, and pledged to work to restore the public cemeteries and the Malecon, Santo Domingo’s seafront boulevard.
He announced that he would prioritize tackling problems such as rainwater drainage, lighting and public safety. Collado promised to improve lighting in 80% of the National District in his first year on the job.
In a reference to the Christmas event organized by the former mayor’s administration, Collado said he did not agree with the installation of three to four million light bulbs in a park when the city lacks basic lighting.
