A shootout occurred at the Municipal Electoral Board in Santo Domingo North yesterday morning, Monday 23 May 2016, reportedly between followers of the mayor, Francisco Fernandez, who is asking for a recount of the votes, and the police.
The protesters burned tires, blocked traffic and threw tear gas bombs, which led to the standoff between the two sides. Businesses were closed and people left the area.
Unrest continues in several parts of the country with protests in Tamboril, Paraiso in the south, a march in Higuey and requests from Santo Domingo East and West for a repeat of the elections.
As of Sunday, 22 May 2016, a week after the general election was held on 15 May 2016, the JCE had still not posted the final election results. Bulletin 11 issued on Sunday evening showed that 97.86 % of the presidential election vote had been completed; 88.67% of the legislative and 94.21% of the municipal vote count. Major technical flaws have tainted the vote count technology contracted by the JCE at a cost of US$31 million. The opposition has been reporting fraud and serious irregularities.
