The government has pledged RD$63 million to rebuild the public produce market in La Vega. President Danilo Medina visited the market on Monday, 30 May 2016 to see the damage caused by the fire.
According to the La Vega fire brigade, the fire affected more than 200 commercial establishments. Firefighters say the blaze was started by a gas leak from a propane gas cylinder used in one of the food stalls in the market.
President Danilo Medina added that while the market is being rebuilt each shopkeeper will receive a monthly subsidy of RD$10,000 to RD$25,000.
Ministers Jose Ramon Peralta and Gonzalo Castillo made the announcement after the President’s meeting with stallholders’ representatives and with provincial governor, Andres Rodriguez, current mayor Alexis Perez and mayor-elect Kelvin Cruz.
