The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is placing the spotlight on a lesser-known Dominican runner, Yancarlos Martinez. Martinez originally hoped to play Major League Baseball, but when that didn’t work out for him, he turned to track. Cuban coach Yaseen Perez saw his potential and has guided Martinez to set several Dominican records in track (100, 200 meters) and for the 4x100m men’s relay.
Martinez was the anchorman for the last leg of the 4×100 relay that ran for a national record of 38.52 set in the heats and won one of the 16 slots to compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. His winning time in the Ibero-American Championships on the Rio track at 20.19 put him into the Games that open on 16 August 2016.
