US Ambassador laments Orlando mass killing

US Ambassador James Brewster issued a statement yesterday, Sunday 12 June 2016, condemning the mass murder of at least 50 people at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida in the early hours of Sunday morning. The venue was celebrating a Latin music night. The Media says that most of the persons first identified as deceased were Latinos.

In a message on his Facebook page, Brewster wrote that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community and people from all over the world were mourning the losses in Orlando. He said that the barbaric act was the result of people who with their words and actions justify hate towards any minority group. He commented that he knows that Americans are united in condemning the terrorist act. “Love will win over hate. It is a sad day,” said the diplomat, who is also a leading US LGBT activist.

News reports say that the father of suspect Omar Mateen says that his son’s motives had nothing to do with religion, and that it was a homophobic act. Mir Seddique told NBC News that the incident might have been triggered by the sight of a gay couple kissing in Miami. However, NBC News reported that Mateen had called the emergency services before the attack and swore allegiance to the so-called Islamic State terrorist group.
