General Hernandez was moved to the post of executive director of the police reform commission, replacing General Juan Antonio Pilarte Feliz who will now be in charge of the police support and services department, previously under General Virgilio Pacheco Garabitos. Other changes include the appointment of General Valentin Rosado Vicioso as director of prevention, replacing General Hector Garcia Cuevas who was appointed to the internal affairs department replacing General Franklin Vittini Duran, as part of a series of changes as reported in 7Dias.
Although Police statistics reflect a decline in the murder rate, economist Pedro Silverio suggests, in an op-ed in Diario Libre, that this could be because Dominicans are surrendering to criminals.
The government has assigned mixed military and police patrols to city patrols.
The Police announced that more motorcyclists driving without correct documents and with a suspicious profile have been arrested in the past few days. Police agents in the Greater Santo Domingo area have been assigned 50 new motorcycles to boost their patrols.
Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito called for more crime prevention work to be carried out. He said that statistics showed that most muggings were carried out by men between the ages of 18-34, most now bearing documents.
