The Ministry of Public Health is warning of the effects of the heat wave currently affecting the country. Cardiologist Victor Atallah said that the main cause of death when there is excessive heat is related to heart and respiratory because the high temperatures can also have an emotional toll, causing a surge of hormones that increases blood pressure. The hot temperatures can also cause thickening of the blood, affecting circulation.
The standard advice is to drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun from 11 am to 4pm and when this is a must, wear head protection.
The Weather agency is forecasting temperatures of more than 31C for Santo Domingo. In some other areas, temperatures have reached 34-37C.
