The transition committee of the mayor elect of Santiago, Abel Martinez announced at a press conference on Monday 13 June 2016 that they were withdrawing from the transition process due to what they described as a series of irregularities by the current administration.
At the press conference, the commission said that green areas are being handed over irregularly, bills being paid without invoices, illegal building work done in the cemeteries and members of the mayor’s family are being given commercial properties in the Plaza del Alfarero.
Johnny Pichardo and Fernando Ramirez, speaking on behalf of the commission asked for a quick and exhaustive investigation into the allegations that the current mayor was illegally taking over commercial properties in the Plaza del Alfarero and they also said he was handing over booths in the Pekin market even though it was under construction.
They highlighted that green areas in the Primaveral area were being given to existing councilors along with a large number of pieces of land in Hato del Yaque.
In the cemeteries they claimed that people were being charged RD$500,000 for the illegal construction of vaults and teams in the Department of Transport were dismantling vehicles to take parts and changing new tires for old ones, in order to use the new tires themselves.
They asked the Attorney General’s office to investigate and prevent the continuation of the situation and warned that legal action would be taken against those responsible.
