Haiti’s Foreign Relations Minister has issued a protest note in response to remarks made by OAS secretary general Luis Almagro about the deadline for the election of a democratically-elected president in Haiti during a 46th OAS General Assembly press conference, as reported in Diario Libre. Foreign Minister Pierrot Delienne says that Haiti is implementing recommendations made by the Independent Commission for Evaluation and Verification of the Elections, which had the support of the OAS.
Speaking at the press conference on Sunday, 12 June 2016, Almagro said there could not be an extension of the original 120-day deadline to elect the president. He added that if the election is not held, another temporary president would need to be elected.
The statement from the Haitian government mentions that Almagro had praised the publication of the electoral calendar that sets the dates for the elections in Haiti as 9 October 2016 and 8 January 2017.
The Haitian government is asking the secretary general to rectify his statement.
