Marcelino Velez Hospital renovation complete

President Danilo Medina was in Herrera on Tuesday, 14 June 2016 for the ceremony marking the completion of the expansion and renovation works at the Marcelino Velez Hospital, which serves Santo Domingo West. The works included the construction of emergency areas for adults and children with 51 beds, an operating theater with capacity for 13, and birth suites, pre and post-natal wards and intensive care units with 15 beds and 19 cribs.

The renovated hospital has 135 additional beds distributed across 54 rooms (eight singles and 46 doubles), as well as 200 parking spaces on two underground levels.

The works were overseen by the Presidency’s Supervisory Office of State Works (OISOE) at a cost of RD$1.7 billion to taxpayers.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Health Altagracia Guzman Marcelino stated that today 70% of Dominicans have medical insurance, including government subsidized plans. Public hospitals are now accepting medical insurance plans.

The hospital director is Luis Danilo Pichardo.
