The northeastern city of San Francisco de Macoris was affected by a strike on Wednesday, 15 June 2016. The protest was called by political and social organizations as part of their demands for a recount in the recent municipal and congressional elections as well as the resignation of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) president Roberto Rosario.
The organizations that called for the 24-hour strike included FALPO, a social justice movement, and the PRM, the main opposition party in the recent elections. The parties are also calling on Congress to pass the political parties bill for the 2020 elections. The bill, which aims to instate measures for internal organization and regulation of political party activities, has stagnated in Congress for several years.
Diario Libre reported that while the strike was not totally effective in the city center, many stores remained closed. Army and Police agents were on patrol duty to prevent disorder.
Diario Libre reporters say that most traders rejected the strike and advised the demonstrators to take their complaints to court using legal methods.
