Martha Heredia allowed to sing outside jail

A Santiago judge has clarified that singer Martha Heredia, currently serving a jail sentence for drug smuggling, is allowed to carry out some public performances, such as the one she did at Miss World Dominicana contest last week.

The judge confirmed that although she is serving a sentence at the Rafey Women’s Jail in Santiago she is allowed free time outside of the jail and during that time she is allowed to perform.

The judge added that she was not receiving special treatment as another 12 people were enjoying the same privilege and were studying and working. Heredia is allowed to study and work from Thursdays to Saturday nights but must return to jail early on Sunday mornings.

Heredia was sentenced to seven years in jail in 2014 after being arrested at Cibao International Airport while boarding a flight to New York with cocaine concealed in the heels of her shoes.

Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito criticized Heredia for participating in artistic shows when she is serving a jail sentence for cocaine trafficking.
