Outgoing Santiago Mayor Gilberto Serulle was questioned by the Office for Specialized Prosecution against Administrative Corruption (PEPCA) on Monday, 20 June 2016, about supposed irregularities during his time in office. His term ends on 16 August 2016.
Serulle was accompanied by his lawyers, Guillermo Estrella and Nicolas Alvarez, to the interview with Pepca director Laura Guerrero and other prosecutors from the department.
On his arrival, Serulle said he had nothing to hide and that he had the support of councilors and the Santiago Industry and Business Association president, Sandy Filpo, who stated that the local government under Serulle had been recognized for its transparency.
Serulle is accused of managing funds on a discretionary basis without complying with procedures or budget. He is also accused of forging documents for contracting services such as garbage collection as well as paying family members and friends a monthly wage, even though most of them were not doing any actual work.
