The Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) is promoting a project to restore a walkway along the walls of the Colonial City. Architect Maribel Villalona said that the restoration of the 16th century walls would provide a new route for tourists to see the Colonial City as part of the Colonial City Tourism Promotion Program with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank and coordinated by the Ministry of Tourism.
Architect Maribel Villalona says that the restoration of the 16th century walls will open up several major public spaces in San Anton, Santa Barbara and San Miguel for tourism.
Belen Moneo, from the Consorcio Rafael Moneo, the firm that won the controversial contract to modernize the San Francisco Ruins, says that they have been working on the architectural plans to restore the walls and the walk since January 2016.
Villalona said that the wall along Avenida del Puerto (Av. Francisco Alberto Caamano) would be restored so that people can walk on top it and enjoy a better new view of the Colonial City to the west. The first phase will involve the restoration of more than one kilometer of 16th century wall. The project, which is scheduled to begin this year, also includes business support for local residents.
Regarding the modernization of the San Francisco Ruins, Villalona said the architectural proposal for the modernization, while on hold at the moment maintains its essence, but the firm is open to modifications.
Dominican architects have expressed opposition to the concrete structures that predominate in the winning design by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo’s firm. As reported, Belen Moneo is the architect who designed the proposal. She told El Caribe that some adjustments could be made, but the plan for installing a concrete roof on the ruins would not be changed.
