Endangered parrots confiscated

The Ministry of the Environment has announced the confiscation of nine Amazona ventralis parrots, an endangered species. The parrots had been captured in the Valle Nuevo National Park in Constanza and were being kept in a warehouse to be sold.

In a press release, the Ministry said that Ramon Garcia, alias Ramon Guandulito, is being held responsible. He will be fined and prosecuted for violation of Environment Law 64-00.

According to the Ministry’s Biodiversity Department director Jose Manuel Mateo, the birds were still growing flight feathers and in around two weeks would have been able to fly again, which is why they were at just the right stage for the traffickers to sell them.

Coincidentally, on Tuesday 21 June 2016 Diario Libre published an article by Eduardo Garcia Michel on the open sale of parrots despite the fact that the practice is banned.
