DR wins Group A of Centrobasket

The Dominican Republic national men’s basketball team placed first in the Group A division of Centrobasket Championship 2016 taking place in Panama City from 19-25 June 2016. Mexico also qualified for the semi-finals for the group. The DR defeated yesterday Virgin Islands 75-69. The tournament is a qualifier for the 2017 FIBA Americup and the Division A of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The DR made it to the semi-finals, and qualified for Division A of FIBA’s new competition system.

In the highlights of the game, FIBA reported that the Dominicans captured a 15-point lead in the third quarter, but the Virgin Islands team reduced the Dominican advantage and got within six points of the opponent during the fourth quarter. Melvyn Lopez’s team stayed calm and closed the match in their favor. The Dominican men dominated the rebounds, 44-36. Angel Delgado was the top scorer for the Dominicans with 21 points.
