A total of 573,733 weddings took place in the Dominican Republic between 2001-2014, reports Diario Libre.
There also have been 234,663 divorces in the DR, or about 41% of the weddings, according to figures from the National Statistics Office (ONE). The highest number of divorces was recorded in the National District with 56,721 and the Province of Santo Domingo with 24,484, followed by Santiago with 39,052. Next was La Vega with 16,598. According to Diario Libre, the reason for so many divorces in La Vega is that the provinces has a fast-track procedure in place with two courts that issue the divorces n one in La Vega city and another in Constanza.
More than half of the divorces were by mutual consent or 119,445, while 115,207 said they were for incompatibility.
As reported, 518,274 marriages were celebrated by Justices of the Peace, while 54,876 were celebrated by Catholic priests. Jehovah’s Witnesses and Evangelical Christian churches have celebrated 583 weddings from August 2013 to December 2014.
