President Medina inaugurates La Nueva Barquita

On Wednesday afternoon, 29 June 2016, President Danilo Medina inaugurated the La Nueva Barquita housing project with 112 buildings and 1,782 apartments located in the La Javilla area of Santo Domingo Norte municipality. Also present for the formal opening of the residential complex were First Lady Candida Montilla and Vice Presidente Margarita Cedeno.

The apartments were built to relocate residents of the La Barquita slum near the banks of the Ozama River.

So far, 1,637 families have received their new dwellings. The residential area has 90 stores, a primary care medical center, baseball and football fields, a basketball court, several day care centers, a church, a vocational center, a high school, a prosecutors’ office, a police station and a sewage water treatment plant. As reported, 1,500 beneficiaries have received their definitive property deeds.

A board was established to oversee the upkeep of the complex. Jose Miguel Gonzalez Cuadra, the Dominican businessmen who was the coordinator of the project, will be on the board that will be head by Father Gregorio Alegria.

The RD$4 billion project was carried as a part of a major government effort to reduce the contamination of the Ozama River.
