Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso defines the year’s goals as far as his ministry is concerned as achieving a foreign service that truly serves the nation to advance forward. He favors a permanent dialogue with the international community with the aim of converging in terms of bilateral and multilateral relations. According to Hoy newspaper, Morales believes that DR-CAFTA will prove to be another of this year’s important achievements. Also planned is the establishment of formal diplomatic relations with India, where he is due to travel in mid-February to strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two nations. He explained that the DR is opening an embassy in Delhi, and highlighted that India is advancing not only in terms of economy, education and culture, but also has great experience in cinematography. “We will work towards achieving a visit of the Indian Prime Minister to the DR and Panama this year”, said Morales. The 26th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) will be held in the DR from 3 to 6 June 2006. As host of the assembly, the DR will have the opportunity to modernize summit meetings. Several Presidents will be meeting in the DR before the assembly to deal with several issues. From 28 to 29 May 2006, the Presidents of Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico will meet in Casa de Campo to continue discussing the energy issue. Also on the agenda are two trips by President Leonel Fernandez, one to Puerto Rico this month, and another to the United Kingdom in March. Fernandez has been invited by the Governor of Puerto Rico and Queen Elizabeth II of the UK, respectively.
