Understanding Haiti

The Ministry of Foreign Relations has published the first issue of the Revista Dominicana de Politica Exterior, which is intended to focus on leading foreign affairs issues. Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso explained that the first issue is dedicated to Haiti. He said that ties with Haiti are the strongest the DR has with any country, given that both share an island and the fact that it is the country’s second largest trading partner. He said that Haiti’s problems are practically of as much interest to Dominicans as to Haitians. Morales Troncoso emphasized that Haiti’s present critical situation is the DR’s problem and that the viability of the Dominican state itself depends greatly on Haiti being able to overcome this situation. The first issue of the quarterly magazine is edited by Frank Marino Hernandez and includes articles by Bernardo Vega, Jose del Castillo, Hugo Guilliani Cury, Inocencio Garcia, and a speech by President Fernandez focusing on Haitian migration to the DR, Silvio Herasme Pena, Frank Baez Evertz, and others.
