The director of Internal and Investigative Affairs for the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Charles Campisi, told reporters that “in order to fight crime, among other things, police corruption must be tackled.” Campisi spoke to reporters at the National Palace after meeting with President Leonel Fernandez. Previously, Campisi had said that corruption is one of the most difficult problems to fight and control within police departments. The NYPD Blue (officer) said that this work would include a dialogue with the internal affairs personnel of the POLITUR (tourist police) and the AMET (traffic police) departments. At the same time the NYPD will open a liaison office at the Ministry of the Interior and the Police in order to support the process. The meeting was also attended by Franklin Almeyda, the Interior and Police Minister, Patrick Gallagher, the intelligence chief of the NYPD, and Juan Avila, the permanent UN ambassador for the Dominican Republic.
