Citizens’ group “Participacion Ciudadana” has exposed the fact that there are more than 1,100 government projects needing completion. The group asked that the government start finishing them in accordance with national priorities. A large proportion of these projects are the construction or repair of schools and hospitals, which impacts on the quality of life of the poorest sectors of the population. PC coordinator Alfonso Abreu Collado said that this figure was discovered in research carried out by Participacion Ciudadana. Abreu Collado presented the 2004 Yearly Report to Participacion Ciudadana’s XI Assembly, and pointed out that the 1,132 projects that needed finishing included some that had been as long as 20 years in the making. Abreu Collado revealed that throughout the first trimester of the year the group would be announcing the projects involving each government department. The large number of unfinished public works represents a huge lost investment of public funds, he explained.
