The Senate, before approving a loan to construct a subway Metro system for Santo Domingo, wants to hear other proposals to the traffic situation. This was the reaction yesterday after the members had listened to the proposal for a monorail system that would cost much less. Andres Bautista, the Senate leader, told reporters that the Senate was open to all debate. At one point in the session, as architect Guillermo Santoni was explaining the monorail project, senator Pedro Alegria asked if the architect and his team were willing to debate the issue with the Metro Minister Diandino Pena. Santoni was eager to agree. And, furthermore, Bautista and other senators were in agreement that the RD$755.5 million pesos set aside in the 2005 budget for the Metro should not be used just for the study of the subway system but rather for the study of alternate systems as well.
