El Caribe newspaper focuses on a program to educate pedestrians underway in the municipality of Santo Domingo East. Civil Defense and Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) volunteers are trying to educate pedestrians and taxi drivers for improvement of the flow of traffic and everyone’s safety. Volunteer Henry Pena explains they teach pedestrians that they should not cross when the light is green, and where they should cross the streets. They teach taxi drivers that they should pick up their passengers 20 meters or more from the street corners, and that they should not obstruct the pedestrian crossing points. Volunteer Piscis Batista told the newspaper reporters that when the program began many people didn’t understand the message and instead insulted them. But she says that after two months educating, she is beginning to perceive changes and is now receiving demonstrations that their work has earned the respect of drivers and pedestrians.
