President Fernandez met with commissioners Gracia Maria Schiffino, Rafael Hernandez, Al Sanchez, Roberto Maldonado and F. Crowl of the city government of Chicago. Manuel Jimenez, of Hoy, reports that President Fernandez discussed the possibility of the city of Chicago sending advisors to consult on garbage disposal with Santiago and Santo Domingo city officers. Fernandez says there are technical problems, but also managerial matters that need to be addressed. President Fernandez was received by Illinois vice governor Pat Quinn. He also met with John Stroger, president of Cook County, who accepted an invitation to visit the DR. President Fernandez also announced that 50 to 100 scholarships to the University of Illinois at Chicago would be available for undergraduate, masters and doctoral studies by Dominicans. These are to be funded by the government. Students will be chosen from the School Merit program that honors the best public school students. The program also contemplates student and teacher exchanges.
Hoy reports that the program with the UIC includes the preparing of hospital managers to improve the quality of health services in the DR.
