The local press comments today on the statement made by Secretary of the Presidency Danilo Medina whereby he alerted that the findings in the audits made to the past administration “would shake the nation”. The audits have not been made public. Medina released the information saying that the government party, PLD, had no intention to seek retaliation against its predecessor, but that if former President Hipolito Mejia wants all to go into the open, then “that will be his responsibility”. Medina added after making the statement that the audits had not been published because they were being finalized. The Fernandez government took office on 16 August 2004.
Medina spoke when interviewed upon attending the Circulo de Montevideo meeting that gathers former Latin American heads of state at the Fundacion Global Democracia y Desarrollo.
Commenting on the statement, El Caribe newspaper in its page 2 editorial, states that the general feeling is that the government should shake the country if this would contribute to making government more decent. “What would be really bad would be if what Medina said is just part of the games politicians play, trying to scare the opponent with this boogie man.”
Hoy newspaper, in its Coctelera editorial column, asks: “Why not disclose the findings of the audits? Is it that the taxpayer doesn’t have the right to know where the government spent or is spending the money for which he is being squeezed until almost not able to breathe?”
