Reporters from the Listin Diario went comparison shopping and found some interesting and often times important variations in prices of everyday items. The report shows important price differences between one supermarket and another on the same item. For example, a 1.8 kg can of Nutra powdered milk costs RD$279.99 at one market and RD$354.52 at another. A 96-oz bottle of Mazorca cooking oil cost RD$146.92 at one store and RD$184.99 at another. There were enormous differences in even something as common as coffee. At one store a half-pound package was selling for RD$37.95 and at another it was RD$29.49, a RD$8.46 difference of 22%! Meats also reflect as much as a RD$10 peso difference in price and poultry can vary by as much as RD$7.84 per pound.
