The rains that have fallen over the past 72 hours have dampened the forest fires that raged for the past 27 days. In spite of assistance from Venezuela, the rains were the definitive step to put out the fires. According to the report in Hoy, Danerys Santana, the deputy minister for Protected Areas, said that the team from Venezuela would be returning home shortly.
On a more positive note, Santana told journalists that there have been many places where the fires passed through so quickly that only the underbrush was burned and the trees survived.
The rains will also assist in the regeneration of forest growth, and the wet vegetation should impede further fire outbreaks.
Environmentalist Domingo Abreu urged that forestation of the affected areas be left up to nature.
