Yes, we have bananas

Bananas move about RD$110 million each week of the harvest season. The money goes to workers, transporters, merchants, exporters and suppliers. Luis Bonilla, the head of the Probanano Project and the vice-president of the Agrobusiness Board (JAD), Osmar Benitez, told reporters that the local banana industry has become stronger as it integrates marketers and clients. The industry is offering incentives to those closest to the harvest, including the Dominican Republic that receives US$60 million from the export of the fruit. The two ag-business leaders told the reporters that programs that are now in place prove that the Dominican Republic has the potential to export US$150 million per year in bananas. Since the DR joined the ACP countries (Africa, Pacific and Caribbean) as part of the Lome Convention and later the Cotonu Agreement, there has been a continual growth in the sector since 1989. And thanks to the efforts of the Probanano people, 85% of the growers are certified under EUREGAP.
