Technical Minister of the Presidency Temistocles Montas told reporters that the government is in talks with the IMF to reduce or remove some of the restrictions that were placed on financial institutions and that have reduced access to credit for many businesses. The modifications would become part of the “Rules for Evaluating Assets” that the IMF helped create to avoid a repeat of the Baninter/Bancredito/Banco Mercantil fiascos.
Talking to reporter Aleida Plasencia from Hoy, Montas said that these changes will occur only when it is sure that they will not alter the basic indications of the IMF agreement that covers the next 28 months of economic life in the Dominican Republic.
