The general manager for EdeNorte, the electricity distributor that serves the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic, told Hoy reporters that the company had increased its client base by 100,000 clients and increased its bill collections by 42%. Fernando Rosa was positive that a successful campaign sponsored by EdeNorte contributed to the recovery. The campaign was successful in getting neighborhood and community organizations as well as the schools to collaborate in the program. Between August 2004 and April 2005, the company increased its client base from 404,000 to 505,000 with the campaign called “EdeNorte is knocking on your door.” The new clients were able to get their electricity problems straightened out and become regular customers of the distributor. Rosa said that the company is continually working with community groups, schools and sports clubs in the poorest barrios in order to reduce the amount of electricity that is lost by bad connections and illegal hook-ups. According to Rosa, there are now much easier ways to pay the electric bill and the company is offering payment plans in order to increase even more its collection percentages.
