Architect Carlos Polibio Michel, “Kalil” to his friends and enemies alike, denied that he had any ties to accused drug trafficker Quirino Paulino Castillo, and places his position as a deputy minister of Public Works at the disposition of President Fernandez. Kalil did admit, however, that in 2002 he did sell two fairly luxurious apartments to the wife of Quirino, and he “had the documents to prove it.” Michel was suspended from his job in the Ministry of Public Works by the Minister Freddy Perez last 12 April. Denying that he had any ties to the accused drug lord, the architect told reporters from Hoy that all he did was construct an apartment complex and sell the apartments. Baseball stars David Ortiz and Odalis Perez were two other people that purchased apartments in the building on Jose Alberto Larancuent Street in the Naco section of Santo Domingo. Quirino’s wife bought the penthouse and another apartment. According to Kalil, the entire issue is a product of the Santo Domingo rumor mill.
