Juan Luis Guerra, the famous composer and singer, was one of the big winners at last night’s Billboard Latin Awards. He walked away with three awards as did Juanes and Paulina Rubio. The Miami event celebrated tropical musicians and their works. Guerra, famous for his work with the 4-40 group and songs such as “Ojala que llueve cafe”, “La bilirubina”, and “Visa para un sueno”, received two awards for recordings: one for “Para ti” and one for the best Christian album. Later Guerra was presented the “Spirit of Hope” award for his work with the 4-40 Foundation.
Mexican actress Ana Gabriel presented the award, calling Guerra “maestro, poet, and a special man that combined the merengue with the bachata, all the while condemning injustices and protecting the poor children of the Dominican Republic.”
The Dominican duo of Monchy and Alexandra also won two awards for their songs “Hasta el fin”and “Perdidos”. In a rather ironic note, Paulina Rubio sang the song “Tengo la camisa negra” that has been banned in the Dominican Republic.
