Friday’s Diario Libre analyzed the slippery cost of government works. The newspaper looked into the completion cost compared to the original budgeted cost of Supreme Court of Justice – RD$1.1 (from RD$150 million); the Juan Bosch Bridge RD$618 million (from RD$430 million), Duarte Highway RD$6 billion (from RD$180 million), Avenida del Puerto RD$570 million (from RD$200 million); Autopista 6 de Noviembre RD$969 million (from RD$150 million), La Isabela Airport RD$1 billion (from RD$200 million), among others. The newspaper explains that there is no legal framework that would oblige contractors to stick to the budget. Also responsible for increased costs is the starting and stoppage of public works when the government undertakes more works than budgeted. The newspaper mentions that there are billions invested in abandoned government construction works nationwide.
