Santo Domingo province prosecutor, Perfecto Acosta told El Caribe that Quirico Rojas Caram, found dead in a Jarabacoa cabana, had told his spouse on Saturday that he would turn himself in to the authorities the following Monday. Rojas Caram was a fugitive in the case of the murder of a couple, for which the prime suspect is Roman Catholic deacon Meregildo Diaz. An army sergeant, Valentin Vicioso has confessed that he fired the fatal shots that killed the couple. News reports suggest that the motive was that the couple was blackmailing Diaz, about whom they had evidence of pedophile activity.
The case has become more scandalous now that the autopsy to Rojas Caram showed that he died as a result of strangulation and that it was not a suicide. With Vicioso and Meregildo Diaz in jail, the death of Rojas widens the scope of those implicated in the crime.
El Caribe newspaper today reports that in the case, a sister of Diaz’s is considered to be an accomplice for having paid RD$30,000 check to Vicioso and not being to explain the reason for the check. Likewise, El Caribe mentions that former director of Civil Defense, Radhames Lora Salcedo is accused of complicity in the case. Vicioso was in the employ of Lora Salcedo. In the murder case, Vicioso and Rojas Caram are mentioned as material authors of the crime, while Meregildo Diaz is the intellectual author.
