The Department of Transit of the Ministry of Public Works has announced that it has re-opened for renewals and issuing of first driver’s licenses. The good news is that the process is going to be 60% swifter; the bad news is that the cost of the service has doubled. Public Works Minister Freddy Perez announced that the driver’s license could now be obtained at 20 centers around the country. The learning permit increased from RD$270 to RD$655 (up 143%), renewals went from RDR245 to RD$580 (137%), and first time issuing of the card is up from RD$305 to RD$790 (160%). The Ministry of Public Works estimates that out of 2.6 million drivers, approximately 800,000 need to renew their documents.
El Caribe points out that the new service is offered by DeKolor, a company that was hand picked by the Ministry, without having to submit a tender. The service was chosen for the security features incorporated in the card that will reduce forgery or alterations. The contract included the renovation of communication networks and systems at the transit department. The first phase of the program is being implemented in Santo Domingo, Santiago and La Romana where centers will be working on extended shifts from 8 to 5 pm. The second phase will reach Puerto Plata, San Francisco de Macoris and Azua.
