Santo Domingo goes up!

In 1958, the tallest objects in the area around what is now Naco and Piantini were almond and mango trees. Three years later, according to El Caribe, the first one-family houses were being built. In 1965 there were barely 310,000 people in Santo Domingo, compared to the latest census, which puts the figure at close to one million. In the center of Santo Domingo, architect Pablo Santos, working with reporters from El Caribe, has identified 141 buildings that range from eight to seventeen stories tall. The research team roamed 120 streets in seven areas: Naco, Piantini, La Arboleda, Evaristo Morales, Paraiso, Serralles and Lope de Vega. Besides the 141 “high-rises” identified, the team also found 18 more under construction. The Naco and Lope de Vega areas were the most heavily populated but Evaristo Morales and Piantini were close by. So far, the city council has received 270 requests to construct buildings of eight stories or more. Besides the seven neighborhoods that were studied, towers are being built in Gazcue, Bella Vista, Los Cacigazgos, La Esperilla and Mirador Sur.
